Frequently Asked Questions
How old (or young) can a boy be to join Cub Scouting?

Cub Scouting is for boys in kindergarten through fifth grades, or 6 to 10 years of age.

How can I become an adult volunteer in Cub Scouting?

Please contact our Cubmaster, Pack Leaders, or Den Leaders to let us know your interest. We will help you understand the process and guide you on areas where the pack needs support. We welcome parent help. All Cub Scout Leaders (Pack and/or Den) are required to undergo a New Jersey State child background check.

How much does Cub Scouting cost?

Annual dues for Norwood Cubscouts Pack 120 are $145 (+$12 for optional subscription to Boys Life Magazine). Dues are paid by the beginning of the Scouting year (September) and cover the cost of Pack and Den meetings, as well as Scout awards and merit badges. Optional activities such as camping and rocketry are additional.

Must I be a U.S. citizen to join Cub Scouting?

Citizenship is not required of youth or adults to become members of the Boy Scouts of America.

Are Cub Scouts the same as Boy Scouts?

Cub Scouting is a program of the Boy Scouts of America—so in that sense, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are both members of the same organization. However, they are entirely different programs: Cub Scouting is a family-oriented program designed specifically to address the needs of younger boys, and serve as an introduction to Boy Scouting.

How often do Cub Scouts meet?

Pack 120 usually meets one Wednesday evening of every month at the American Legion in Norwood. All Cub Scouts and their families attend. Each individual Den typically meets once a month, in a time and place determined by the Den Leaders. Each den may hold a special activity, such as a service project or visit to a local museum in place of one of the monthly meetings or in addition to the monthly meetings. Likewise, our Pack may conduct a special event such as a campout as an additional event, or as a substitute for its monthly pack meeting.

May parents attend den meetings?

Yes! Cub Scouting is a family-centered program. It is not a drop-off program. Den meetings are intended to be an activity for the individual boys, and your den leader will be working hard to keep the Cub Scouts focused. A parent or guardian is expected to attend.

What supplies and equipment are needed to participate in Cub Scouting?

Each boy in Cub Scouting will need a Class A blue uniform shirt and a handbook. Each year, he will need a new handbook, cap, and neckerchief; but other uniform parts remain the same for at least the first three years. When a boy enters a Webelos den, he will need a new khaki uniform (the khaki-and-olive uniform). Class A uniforms are worn to all Den and Pack meetings. Class A uniforms and handbooks can be purchased online through http://www.scoutstuff.org or in person at the Alpine Scout Camp's Trading Post on 9W in Alpine or Ramsey Outdoor.

Instructions on where to place Cub Scout insignia can be found here:

Pack 120 also offers a Class B uniform (t-shirt) that is worn to certain activites such as Campouts, Camp-Ins, Rocketry, Kick-ball event, etc. Scouts and/or parents may also wear Class B uniforms outside of Cub Scouting activities, whenever they wish to share their pride in their Pack.

Additional supplies and equipment may be needed for certain optional activities such as camping trips. We will help advise you on the additional equipment as the need arises.

When a Webelos Cub Scout earns the Arrow of Light, what happens next?

Pack 120 will coordinate with our local Troop 120 to facilitate the transition from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting. This transition is celebrated at our Blue & Gold and Bridging Ceremonies.
